Beyond the Marquee’s Resident Whovian, 6 year old Lindalee Rose was on hand at the famous Ziegfeld Theater in New York City for BBC America’s 2014 World Tour Fan Screening Premiere Event of Season 8 of Doctor Who.

Beaming with excitement and with questions well prepared, Lindalee chatted it up not only with the latest regeneration of our favorite time-lord; Peter Capaldi, but also fellow traveling companion, Clara, played by Jenna Coleman, the show’s Executive Producer Steven Moffat and the Nerdist’s own Chris Hardwick who emceed the nights events.

Watch as Lindalee puts her name in the hat when confronting Steven Moffat about taking over for Jenna Coleman as the next companion, gets a hug backstage from her favorite Soufflé girl Clara herself, and suggests a new catchphrase to the 12th Doctor as he embarks on a new set of adventures.

NOTE: Check back on Saturday, 8/23 for Lindalee’s recap of the premiere episode of “Deep Breath” as she reviews the episode with fellow Whovians who were in attendance that evening as well. And in the weeks to come look for more questions with Lindalee and the Season 8 cast related to future episodes of the show!

32nd Edition of the Miami International “Mini Film Fest” starts October 16

Miami International Film Festival (MiamiFF), a program of Miami Dade College’s MDCulture, has announced the lineup for MIFFecito 2014, the “mini” film festival which provides a mid-season “taste” to next year’s 32nd edition running March 6-15, 2015. Taking place over four days (October 16- 19, 2014), MIFFecito will premiere international films submitted from countries including Bhutan, Cuba, Italy, Mexico, Poland, and Spain. Miami Dade College’s Tower Theater will serve as the exclusive location for all screenings.

MiamiFF Executive Director Jaie Laplante mentions, “As Miami’s beloved cafecito culture is to mid-day refreshment, MIFFecito is to our annual March festival. MIFFecito is an appetizer to MiamiFF’s main course, the perfect Fall break for film lovers who crave a cinematic fix.”

The ‘mini’ festival’s film slate includes:

Behavior (Conducta) (Cuba), directed by Ernesto Daranas. FLORIDA PREMIERE. *OPENING NIGHT FILM – FOLLOWED BY OPENING NIGHT PARTY AT THE SOON-TO-BE-OPENED “BALL & CHAIN” NIGHTCLUB. In director Ernesto Daranas’ second dramatic feature film, which will screen opening night at MIFFecito, a Havana boy sent to a reform school becomes the subject of a moral tug-of-war between generational ideologies in today’s Cuba. The complex, dramatic story centers on Chala, who on the critical cusp of adolescence, scrapes by with few positive role models as he illegally trains fight dogs. After Chala is sent to reform school, his addict mother’s attempts to have him released set up a chain reaction among the school leaders. Since its premiere in Cuba, the film became an unexpected social phenomenon sparking Cuba’s current social state as a hot topic for discussion.

“The Blue Car” (“El carro azul”) (Germany / Cuba), directed by Valerie Heine. FLORIDA PREMIERE. A short dramatic film about Marcos. His grandmother’s death forces Hansel, his worldly brother, to return Cuba to care for him, and an old family game helps restore the trust lost over the years.

Carmina POSTERCarmina and Amen (Carmina y amén) (Spain), directed by Paco León. NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERE. Actor-cum-director Paco León is a familiar face to Miami art film lovers. He starred in the 2013 film Three Many Weddings which played at MiamiFF31. But the year prior, he created a charming showcase for the incredible force, charisma and outrageous personality of his actress-mother Carmina Barrios’ in Carmina or Blow-Up, which became an unexpected hit both in Spain and Miami. In this 2014 sequel, Carmina and Amen, Carmina triumphantly returns, upgrading the low-budget original with a deeper, more mature work that ups the ante on her larger-than-life outlook on family, sex, death and any other topic that falls into her purview.

I Can Quit Whenever I Want (Smetto quando voglio) (Italy), directed by Sydney Sibilia. Full of farcical comedy and social commentary, I Can Quit Whenever I Want is director Sydney Sibilia’s vehicle to offer Italians the chance to chuckle at the gloomy 43% unemployment rate for Italy’s youth. Realizing their post-graduate degrees are worthless, a rag-tag crew of desperate intellectuals imagine a new psychotropic drug, and then apply their refined but completely unmarketable skills to the illicit drug trade, much to the chagrin of the local Mafia. This film was nominated for 12 Donatello Awards, the Academy Awards of Italy.

LAKE LOS ANGELES posterLake Los Angeles (U.S.A.), directed by Mike Ott. FLORIDA PREMIERE. Francisco, played by Miami’s  Roberto Sanchez, is a middle-aged Cuban man who works odd construction jobs, and makes money on the side by providing his home as a holding house for illegal Mexican immigrants. Cecilia, a 10-year-old Mexican girl, crosses the border hoping to find a better life in the US, but her treacherous journey into the Promised Land will test her spiritual and physical fortitude. Lake Los Angeles (2014) completes Mike’s desert trilogy which also includes: Littlerock (2010) and Pearblossom Hwy (2012).

Life Feels Good (Chce się zyć) (Poland), directed by Maciej Pieprzyca. FLORIDA PREMIERE. The winner of several major awards at the 2014 Polish Academy Awards, Life Feels Good is about a boy born with cerebral palsy and whose inner voice dialogue drives the film’s narrative during his 26 year fight to communicate with the world. Like My Left Foot, which is also based on a true story, the Maciej Pieprzyca-directed film draws parallels to Poland’s national struggles over the time period of Mateusz’s life, both the nation and the man refusing to give up.

Paradise (Paraíso) (Mexico), directed by Mariana Chenillo. FLORIDA PREMIERE. Director Mariana Chenillo’s second feature film takes on society’s obsession with “the perfect body” through definitions of relationship balance. A deeply in-love, overweight married couple’s relationship suffers when, humiliated by social weight-loss chatter, they mutually seek to shrink their plus-sized bodies. Only one spouse succeeds, burdening the “failing” spouse with today’s idea of appearance and self-worth, even in the presence of unconditional love. The premiere at the Festival will be Chenillo’s second visit. Her previous film, Nora’s Will, won the Audience Award at MiamiFF26 in 2009.

Root (Raiz) (Chile), directed by Matías Rojas Valencia. FLORIDA PREMIERE. What happens when the estranged, abused 20-something daughter of a privileged family spontaneously adopts a nine year old boy orphaned from her domineering mother’s maid’s death? A long, rewarding road-trip, fraught with self-discovery, and bond-building.

SPANISH AFFAIR posterSpanish Affair (Ochos apellidos vascos) (Spain), directed by Emilio Martínez-Lázaro. EAST COAST PREMIERE. The 98-minute comedy is the all-time highest-grossing Spanish film at the domestic Spanish box office in 2014. A love-smitten Seville man must pretend to be a Basque man in order to win the girl of his dreams, highlighting the cultural divide between northern and southern Spain. The tensions of Basque separatist sentiments, exasperated by Spain’s economic crisis, are a difficult daily reality, providing a taboo-busting opportunity to ease the pain with laughter through a seemingly-innocent film that proves otherwise.

Vara: A Blessing (Bhutan / Hong Kong / Sri Lanka), directed by Khyentse Norbu. FLORIDA PREMIERE. Director Khyentse Norbu’s lush, breathtaking visuals unfold the story of India’s brutal, indiscriminate caste system, which too-frequently constricts the possibility for the simplest, earnest relationships. The communion of love, art and spirituality collide when a lower-caste Muslim enraptures a lovely Hindu girl through the earthy, artistic grace of pottery, complicating village elder plans of marrying Lila off to a wealthy scion. Vara: A Blessing is a triumphant expression of whirling dance, music and the boundaries of devotion. The film is accompanied by music from worldwide famed composer and producer Nitin Sawhney.

In addition to MIFFecito’s slate of premieres, visionary playwright and director Moisés Kaufman will host a special event titled A Conversation with Moisés Kaufman & THE LARAMIE PROJECT Retrospective Screening. The Laramie Project, his landmark 2002 HBO documentary, chronicles the legislative aftermath of gay teen Matthew Shephard’s hate-crime murder. The film, an exposé of intolerance and discrimination which echoes current news from Russia and Africa, offers fresh lessons in the ongoing war. The Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act has positively impacted the past five years in the United States. The director will lead a post-screening conversation on the issues, techniques, and engagement his landmark film helped spark. Originally from Caracas, Venezuela, Kaufman is currently in Miami rehearsing for the November debut of Bizet’s Carmen, which is being co-produced by his Tectonic Theater Project.

Beyond the Marquee and our friends at SpyGame Studios recently caught up with legendary actor, Mark Hamill, who was in Los Angeles last week to honor and support his long-time friend and Star Wars co-star, Carrie Fisher, at The Midnight Mission’s Golden Heart Awards Gala.

With only a couple of minutes to speak to the legendary actor who has played both Jedi and Joker, we managed to find out what and who he was wearing, discuss the night’s event and also discover a little about the beard he’s currently sporting.

The gala, which took place at The Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los Angeles, commemorated the 100-year anniversary of The Midnight Mission. Hamill, who is back for the latest installment of  Star Wars along with Fisher, took a break from the London set where the new movie is being filmed in order to attend the charity event.

By now, most of the world knows that Wednesday Oct. 21st, 2015 marked the fictional date when Doc Brown and Marty McFly ventured into the year 2015 in Back to the Future Part II. What most of the world may NOT know is that Oct. 21st, 2015 kicked off a 5-day, 30th anniversary event that immersed BTTF fans with once-in-a-lifetime interactive experiences in and around Los Angeles, CA, home to the majority of Back to the Future trilogy locations.

November 5th is a historic date in the mythology of the film franchise not only because it’s the day when Doc Brown invented time travel, but it is also the same day Marty McFly traveled back in time to 1955 from 1985.  In celebration of those events, we’d like to fire up the time circuits and invite you to click ahead to read about the exciting events surrounding the 30th anniversary events and watch all five of our Exclusive Beyond the Marquee videos produced in collaboration with BacktotheFuture.com.

Fans pose with actor Jeffrey Weissman (George McFly in Parts II & III) at Universal Studios Hollywood.

The event organizers of WereGoingBack.com produced a 5 day schedule this year that kicked off on Future Day itself (October 21st, 2015).  This gave fans a rare chance to visit the holy ground of the courthouse square on the Universal Studios Hollywood backlot.  The fun continued the next day with a recreation of Hill Valley in the town of Fillmore, CA where you could ride on a Hoverboard attached to a crane and cruise along the railroad tracks in a DeLorean about to be crushed by the actual diesel locomotive from Part III. If that wasn’t enough to get fans fluxing, they were then taken around the next day to tour actual filming locations including Marty’s school and Doc’s mansion then culminating with a block party in front of the McFly house in Arleta. The weekend’s festivities included an prop and memorabilia auction and a recreation of the ‘Enchantment Under the Sea Dance’ attended by of cast and crew from all the movies.  The grand finale to the festivities occurred at Puente Hills Mall (aka Twin Pines Mall) with a screening of the original 1985 film.  The night event included a recreation of the infamous DeLorean and Libyan van chase in the parking lot synced in real-time with the film.

Beyond the Marquee, working in tight collaboration once again with our good friends at BacktotheFuture.com and with unlimited access from the WereGoingBack.com team, were on hand to cover the events for the 5 days.  We had a blast!

For fans who attended or wished they could, we are glad to compile all the ‘We’re Going Back’ days videos here for your viewing pleasure.

Enjoy!

Fillmore, CA was transformed into the fictional town of Hill Valley as part of the ‘We’re Going Back’ week long celebration for the 30th Anniversary of Back to the Future. Fans took part in themed movie screenings, Hoverboard riding, and taking a seat in a DeLorean set on the train tracks with a diesel locomotive looming ahead.

We’re Going Back – Day 3: BTTF Locations – 10/23/2015

An entire day devoted to visiting the Back to the Future filming locations around Southern California made up Day 3 of the ‘We’re Going Back’ week long celebration for the 30th Anniversary of Back to the Future. A visit to Doc’s Mansion, the homes of George & Lorraine, Hill Valley High School and more eventually culminated with a huge, once-in-a-lifetime, block party in front of the McFly home in Arleta.  Fans from around the world partied like it was 1985.

We’re Going Back – Day 4: The Dance – 10/24/2015

The 4th day of the ‘We’re Going Back’ celebration was filled with a viewing of the documentary premiere of ‘OUTATIME’ and a BTTF prop and costume auction.  Later that evening, fans gathered later for a stunning recreation of the memorable rhythmic ceremonial ritual known as the ‘Enchantment Under the Sea Dance’. With special guest appearances from cast & crew from the films, it was a night that Back to the Future fans would never forget.

We’re Going Back – Day 5: Puente Hills Mall – 10/25/2015

As the 5th and final day of the ‘We’re Going Back’ Events came to a close, fans were treated to a special 30th Anniversary Back to the Future celebration at the Puente Hills Mall (aka Twin Pine/Lone Pine Mall). The electric atmosphere centered around an outdoor screening of the movie, a real-time (in sync to the movie) recreation of the DeLorean vs Libyan van chase around the mall, and a Live Skype chat with Doc Brown himself (actor Christopher Lloyd).  Fans of Back to the Future were awarded with a once-in-a-lifetime experience that would be hard to forget!

“From the moment we saw this film we knew we wanted to join Nate Parker in fulfilling his vision as the film’s portrayal of injustice is unfortunately still relevant today.  His dedication and artistry in revitalizing Nat Turner’s legacy and place in history has resulted in an extraordinarily compelling and moving film that delivers on every level.  The ensemble cast, led by Nate Parker, is committed and exceptional,” said Gilula and Utley.

“It brings me immense joy and excitement to welcome the Searchlight team into our family. I embrace their shared passion for this film and its potential impact on our country and the world,” said director, writer, producer and star Nate Parker.

Gilbert and Preston Holmes.

Set against the antebellum South, THE BIRTH OF A NATION follows Nat Turner, a literate slave and preacher, whose financially strained owner, Samuel Turner, accepts an offer to use Nat’s preaching to subdue unruly slaves. BTM EXCLUSIVE! – [VIDEO & PICS] School is Back in Session for Edie McClurg, Cinema’s Favorite Secretary from ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’

$

Recently, the Principal’s office at the fictitious location of Shermer High school was once again home to actress Edie McClurg, who was given the chance to reprise her role as ‘Grace’, the famous huge-hairdo’d school secretary from the 1986 classic film, FERRIS BUELLER’S DAY OFF.  The film celebrates it’s 30th anniversary this year.

El Camino Real High School in Woodland Hills, California served as one of the few filming locations based in Southern California that doubled as Chicago in the film (another was the home in Long Beach which served as the Bueller residence). After the conclusion of a busy school day, the high school’s administration graciously allowed the production crew of www.FerrisFest.com to recreate a scene with Edie McClurg who, for this updated take, was now portraying an operator at the “Ferris Fest” Headquarters.

The Beyond the Marquee team was on hand lending an experienced crew and equipment to help shoot and produce this exclusive promotional video, directed by Ferris Fest’s very own Event Organizer, David Blanchard.

Click ahead after the jump for some cool behind the scenes pictures from this unique shooting day!

Be sure to check out www.FerrisFest.com for all the incredible details of events and invited guests included as part of the big “Ferris Fest” celebration taking place in the next few weeks in Chicago, Illinois!

It was the first time in over 3 decades since McClurg had portrayed Grace and she was excited to help out filming this fun promo for the upcoming “Ferris Fest.” In-between takes, Edie was busy signing autographs for the school staff, posing for pictures, and even jokingly telling students that were making too much noise in the halls to quiet down.

Edie McClurg returns to the Secretary's desk 30 years later. She felt right at home and kept the crew laughing reciting all her famous lines from the movie (spot-on) in-between takes.

Director David Blanchard placed the promo video cameras in positions that were similar to what was seen in the original film which served to bring back a visual familiarity.

Though the desk that Edie sat at 30 years ago was replaced some years back, for the promo she was seated in the exact same spot at a new desk located right outside the Principal’s office – still sporting the very identifiable red-brick wall that could be seen behind Mr. Rooney in the original film.

[VIDEO] Check Out the 30th Anniversary ‘Ferris Bueller’ TWIST and SHOUT Re-creation!

On Sunday, May 22nd, 2016, close to 3000 fans of the classic 1986 John Hughes comedy, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, convened on Daley Plaza in downtown Chicago, Illinois for a live re-creation of the celebrated “Twist and Shout” parade scene from the original film. The event provided a rousing finale to the 30th Anniversary “Ferris Fest” celebration events that took place that weekend.

With look-alikes of Ferris, Sloane, and Cameron in attendance, the Chicago crowd took part in a spot-on re-enactment of the parade singing performances and dance routines of “Danke Schoen” and “Twist and Shout.” For Lee Ann Marie, the Dance Production Director, it was like deja vu all over again.  30 years prior, Lee Ann had been one of the original Fräulein performers in the film and she was excited to return with six talented Fräulein-costumed dancers to re-create the iconic parade performance. Every single move, step, turn, and high kick was carefully arranged using only the movie’s dance scene as their guide.

Beyond the Marquee’s Creative Director, Steve Czarnecki, flew in to Chicago with the BTM crew and had unlimited access to all of the “Ferris Fest” locations, events, cast members, and VIP attendees throughout the weekend. A self-proclaimed uber-fan of John Hughes films and Ferris Bueller, Steve was thrilled to be on hand to archive all of the memorable moments that made up the 30th Anniversary celebration. It was an amazing honor and highlight for the BTM crew to produce and film the “Twist & Shout” homage dance routine as seen in the video above and we think it’s probably the biggest shoot we’ve directed yet!

Scroll down the page after the jump to learn some fun facts about the parade re-creation and check out some great pics from the event.

PLUS, be sure to visit Beyond the Marquee next week as we’ll be rolling out our 3-part “Ferris Fest” weekend recap videos that put you right in with the fans and cast who came out to Chicago to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the film. Filled with special events, filming locations, VIP guests, exclusive interviews, and more, you will not want to miss the excitement!

Fun Facts

An event as big as re-creating the famed parade dance routine from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off could not have happened without a great amount of participation from several individuals and organizations throughout Chicagoland.  Here are some fun facts about how the routine came back to life beat-for-beat 30 years later:

8fb981_71dacc6e7d7b498d974e5ec960636543

Chicago’s own famed South Shore Drill Team performed during the ‘Twist and Shout’ LIVE parade re-creation.  In 1986, the team was only in its fifth year of existence when they performed for the original parade sequence in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Even though only a portion of their iconic synchronized moves were seen in the film, the current generation of SSDT performed the ENTIRE original full-length routine that had been prepared and performed for when the cameras rolled on the film. Check out the South Shore Drill Team at their official website.

* Lee Ann Marie joined the “Ferris Fest” team as Dance Production Director. Lee Ann had been a professional dancer for six years in the 80’s before being cast as a dancing Fräulein on the parade float during the “Twist and Shout” sequence in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, which remains one of her favorite credits to this day. In the film, Lee Ann is the blonde Fräulein in the center immediately behind Matthew Broderick. Other highlights in her career include being a pro cheerleader for both the Chicago Bears and the Chicago Bulls and co-starring and dancing in the band Survivor’s #1 MTV video, “I Can’t Hold Back”. Lee Ann now manages her own company, Lee Ann Marie Productions (www.leeannmarieproductions.com) and was very excited by the prospect of reinventing the choreography for the ‘Twist and Shout’ parade re-creation.

IMG_1526

* Hank Fiene with ABC Parade Floats was one of the original designers and builders of the parade float used in the 1986 film that Ferris Bueller and the Fräulein dancers Twisted and Shouted upon. 30 years later, Hank worked with Ferris Fest to re-build the replica 30 x 8 ft float, based off the original designs from the classic film.

LymanDancing* Remember when Ferris’ dad heard the parade music from his office and did his own little dance? Lyman Ward, the actor who played Ferris’ father, attended the “Twist & Shout” parade re-creation and has a quick cameo in the video above.

* The dancing maintenance crew you see in the updated video were shot on the fly (and with no accompanying music) as our BTM crew waited for their Taxi, shortly after arriving at the Chicago airport. The 2 workers on the lift at Ohare Airport were extremely good-sports when we explained to them that we needed a quick insert shot of dancing construction workers for a re-creation video we were producing for Ferris Fest.

* Daley Plaza (that’s where they got that Picasso), was used as the location for the Ferris dance scene re-creation and has also been used as a filming location for several Chicago-based movies — most notably, The Blues Brothers (1980) and The Fugitive (1993).

Screen Shot 2016-06-01 at 1.08.37 AM

* Ryan Stajmiger, who got his first chance to cosplay as Ferris Bueller during the 30th Anniversary re-creation, has yet to meet Matthew Broderick.  However, his uncanny resemblance to the actor has earned him roles in stage productions that Matthew has had a part in on Broadway including playing Leo in “The Producers” and Eugene Morris Jerome in “Brighton Beach Memoirs” (Broderick’s first Broadway gig). Ryan was thrilled to have the chance to step into a character that’s so universally loved by fans around the world.
